Neighborhood GIS

Neighborhood GIS:
The Northwest Commission, through Neighborhood GIS, has the ability to serve GIS datasets over the Internet to an end user. Serving this GIS, via the Internet, is made possible through a software package called ArcIMS (Internet Map Server). This means that the Northwest Commission can serve, maintain and house the GIS data it currently has, and others can use it without developing, maintaining, or storing it themselves.

Neighborhood GIS Benefits:
All two hundred and sixty five (265) municipalities, in northwest Pennsylvania, are able to access Neighborhood GIS (via the Internet) for free. This aspect of Neighborhood GIS provides basic GIS data (roads, hydrology, watersheds, municipal boundaries, school districts, census tracts, etc.) that is available from many different sources (PennDOT, DEP, USGS, etc.). Neighborhood GIS will allow end users to perform numerous operations with this data (i.e. simple queries and searches, print maps, create buffers, measure distances, etc.).

By utilizing the GIS tools available with Neighborhood GIS, local governments/communities will become more effective in planning, inventory collection, infrastructure improvement, economic development, public safety, permitting, etc. Neighborhood GIS will be available wherever you have Internet access.

Neighborhood GIS Advanced Services (fee based):
Our partners (local/county government, tourism, economic development, non-profits, etc.) in the eight county region taking advantage of this service will have their own custom ArcIMS web site created. These specific web sites could include specific GIS data that is not freely accessible and provided through the basic Neighborhood GIS site. This may include data (manholes, sewer/water lines, trees, signs, historic sites, cemeteries, driving tours, points of interest, etc.) that would be collected with a sub-meter Global Positioning System (GPS). This also could include data that currently exists in a municipality or at your organization. Participants can choose to have their site password protected or freely accessible to the public. There will be a minimal annual fee charged for the creation, hosting, and maintenance of the ArcIMS web site along with a fee for any data creation.
