Trade Shows Provide Marketing Opportunity/Business Attraction for Region’s Industries

The Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning & Development Commission partnered with other regional economic development partners to participate in two well attended industry trade shows – both reaching a crowd close to 20,000 buyers worldwide.

MD&M East, June 14-17

June 14-17, the region teamed up to attend the Medical Design and Manufacturing East (MD&M) trade show in New York City through Team Pennsylvania.  Thirteen professionals in economic development met with site selectors from across the globe to promote the manufacturing industry in northwest Pennsylvania.  One prospect has already contacted the Northwest Commission, and has received information on relocating to the northwest region.  Team PA representative, Cindie Linnon, promotes region

Jersey and New York to get feedback regarding the region’s strengths and weaknesses. 

“The trade show was a huge success and really presented a lot of opportunities for the region.  Many useful contacts were made, and we will be following-up with them soon”, said Lisa Hamrick, Communications Manager of the Northwest Commission.
 

BIO 2005, June 19-22

June 19-22, northwest Pennsylvania was represented at the BIO 2005 trade show in Philadelphia by six professionals from the "Team PA West" Partners.  20,000 p

With 190 panel discussions and more than 900 speakers, BIO '05 is the largest science and technology symposium in the world. The people attending this convention are committed to curing what ails humanity, to feeding us, to making sure we have clean water and other resources, and to making sure we are safe from terrorist attacks.

Pennsylvania was chosen as the host state of the BIO 2005 International Convention in large part because it is aTeam PA West Team promots region global hub of life sciences investments, academic and industry partnerships, and industry. Pennsylvania is located in the heart of the bio-pharma corridor - 80 percent of the United States' pharmaceutical companies are located within a 50-mile radius of Philadelphia. Team PA West was honored to be apart of the state-wide team and told of our regional efforts with Knowledge Park, Trinity Point (Clarion University) and SelectPAgreatlakes.com to name a few.

Web-Based Economic Development

The Northwest Commission held a “soft launch” of the website for our partners and stakeholders to go over the advantages of having the regional business attraction website with a comprehensive database of sites and buildings and over 34,000 points of economic data.  A marketing plan is currently being developed and a “hard launch” of the website will be sometime in August.

1 Loan Closed!

Loan Closed in June:

  1. A 190,000 EDA/RLF loan closed to Seneca Printing Express, Inc. of Venango County.  The loan was used to purchase business assets including machinery & equipment and inventory.  Seneca Printing Express, Inc. will create ten jobs.

Newly Aligned PTAC Team Announced!

The Northwest Commission’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) would like to formally announce the newly aligned PTAC Team. The team consists of Aubri Minerd, who has been with the PTAC program for two and a half years is now Manager, Government Contracts and will be working to advance the services of the program;  Dianne McCartney, Government Contracting Specialist will aid in the outreach and advancement process;  Jerry Cassell, Government Contracting Specialist has also joined the program for the summer and will be closely working with our clients on specific contracts.

Beginning in July, Aubri and Dianne will begin visiting surrounding PTAC’s to assess their programs and find other opportunities and ideas to help aid our PTAC staff better serve the region. 

Please Note: The Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) in Columbus, Ohio will be holding their annual DSCC Supplier Conference, August 29-31. Any interested company who would like to join our PTAC staff for this three-day event is encouraged to contact Aubri or Dianne for further information.

The Local Development Districts selected Spotts, Stevens, and McCoy of Reading to conduct a broadband needs assessment for 5 LDDs in Pennsylvania.  The needs assessment will begin in August and will likely conclude in June 2006.
